9 December Paris

We arrived at Charles de Gaulle Airport an hour late due to delays. After two RER train trips and a brisk walk, we eventually arrived at our hotel.

We traveled to Place de la Concorde and took a stroll up the Champs-Elysees, which was transformed into a Village de Noel complete with twinkling lights and the remnants of the morning’s snow. The boys took photos of the Arc de Triomphe, and we hurried to the Salle Pleyel for the evening concert.

The performance featured the Oberon Overture by Weber and Till Eulenspiegel and Der Rosenkavalier Suite by Strauss, but the boys were most amazed by Yuja Wang’s performance of Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a theme by Paganini. The enthusiastic audience’s response ensured several encores, all delivered with equal brilliance.

We spent the morning at the Louvre Museum, enjoying the Classical exhibits and seeing famous works such as the Venus de Milo, the Virgin of the Rocks and the Mona Lisa.

We traveled to Montmatre for a light lunch and a walk around the Basilique de Sacre-Coeur.

The boys enjoyed a proper dinner at the Restaurant Chartier, before we split into two groups: one, with Dr Oosthuizen, went to the New Morning Jazz Club to hear the Big Band Ernesto Tito Puentes play Latin music; the other, with Mr Upchurch, traveled to the foot of the Eiffel Tower and to the Trocadero to see the light-show on the hour.
